About APIs

An Application Programming Interface (API) is a structured way for one software system to communicate with another. APIs are used across modern digital platforms to share information, trigger actions, and streamline workflows.

In Box+Dice, APIs allow other systems to securely look up or update information—helping you maintain accurate data, automate tasks, and connect with trusted real estate technology partners. Businesses use APIs to reduce manual work, improve data consistency, and integrate multiple tools into one connected workflow.

Types of API interactions

APIs generally fall into two main categories depending on how the data is used.

Look up information (read only)  

These interactions allow an external system to look up information without making changes to your data.

Example scenario:

• When you enter an address in Box+Dice and it is autocompleted. These autocomplete addresses are not stored in Box+Dice – they are accessed from another system via API

Look up and update information (read/write)

Read/write APIs allow another system to both retrieve and update information in Box+Dice.

Example scenario:

• A system outside of Box+Dice might access contact details and email addresses via the API to send a mailout, then write a history note back to each contact about the mailout
