Summary

Learn how merge fields work in Library Templates, how to insert them correctly, and how to fix issues when merge fields don’t display.

This article covers:

About merge fields

Merge fields tell Box+Dice where to insert information from your database, such as contact or listing details, when generating letters or emails.

Each generated document uses the same template, but the information is personalised for each contact or listing.

Use merge fields to personalise templates

Merge fields allow you to personalise correspondence for multiple recipients.

For example:

  • Each letter can address a contact by name
  • Listing‑specific details can change automatically

The data comes directly from the Contact and Listing records in Box+Dice.

Insert merge fields into a template

Adding merge fields is quick and easy while editing a template.

To insert a merge field:

  • Place your cursor where you want the information to appear
  • In the left‑hand panel, select a Category

  • Double‑click the required merge field to insert it
Tip: The easiest way to learn merge fields is by experimenting with different fields and previewing the results.

Fix merge fields that are not displaying

If a merge field shows blank or doesn’t populate, the source information may be missing or incorrect.

Check the following:

  • Confirm the information exists in the Contact or Listing record
  • Make sure you’re using the correct field type and required Bookends
Note: A Business Name contact won’t populate if you use an Individual Name merge field, and vice versa.
